Understanding the meanings of common kinds of flowers is very important when you send flowers to someone, because human beings perceive flowers with different feelings and implications.

Type of flower signify the feeling you express to the receiver. Roses are often interpreted as signifying passionate love and deep friendship. Lotuses, peonies and lilies are considered symbols of courtesy, tenderness and loyalty. Orchids means noble beauty and maturity while sunflowers mean youth, eagerness and a promising future.

Knowing what type of flowers the receiver likes helps in choosing the type of flowers one can send. Best flower for newly married couple might be red roses and peonies, to wish them love and a happy marriage. The best suited flowers for a bride are lilies, orchids and roses.

The meaning of roses: the color of roses; the number of roses each has got their meaning. Do you know that 11 roses represent "You are my treasured one; the one I love most in my life" whereas 15 roses represent "I am truly sorry, please forgive me"? Now isn't that a total twist of the meaning for the roses you gave? What had meant to be a message of love has just turned into a message of apology; implying you was guilty of something?

One flower type that has not been mentioned above is the Sunflower. Sunflowers are known to represent happiness and well being. In Asia sunflowers are often attributed to good luck and health. Sunflowers are also a wonderful gift because they last so long even as a cut flower - usually two weeks or more. There are many sites such as FTD and 1800 flowers that offer sunflowers, but my favorite is www.sunflowerguy.com which specializes in only sunflowers.
