Has anyone heard of this? I heard with half an ear that in hot climates its possible to train your grass to dig deep roots and this need watering a lot less? Does this make sense?
How would it be done?

It has to do with watering deeply and less frequently as opposed to watering superficially and more often.

That's interesting. I water my grass with a drip system, so I suppose if it was buried it would constitute as deeper? I am surprised I haven't heard of this before given the state of the water where I am.

No, the advantage is in watering more (volume of water) and not as often, versus less (again, volume of water) but more often. Where a person's lawn is located has a lot to do with how much water a lawn requires to make deep roots instead of shallow ones.
