I was going to buy some pennywort for my pond but noticed it looks like the dollar grass in my yard. Is that the same plant?

Can you post your picture of the dollar grass?
Pennywort is a plant of the hydrocotyle family. It may live out of water in region of high humidity.

It really looks like pennywort.
The only time i've seen it out of water was on the edge of a reservoir..
Anyway, try it

Yeah, it does look like pennywort. I think they are cousins. I planted some in the pond the other day and they look happy. I will keep you posted on how they fare.

Thanks Miglsy. You don't need to "plant" them. Simply leaving them floating in water is enough. Or you can plant only one end of the plant, it gonna grow up in a vertical way.

Thanks Rik. I'll do that. My fish will like the privacy floating plants provide.

Fish like carps or goldfish might eat the plant!!

They are comets.

They were looking at the plant curiously the day I planted it. But the next day it was still there. I will keep an eye on them to see if they are eating it. Thanks.

Comets will consider your pennywort as salad
You may add some vallisneria to the pond. They are robust against comets.

So far so good on the "salad." :: The fish ignore it. But I think they enjoy the privacy of the floating dollar grass. I put lots of it in the pond and it covers the entire surface.

I'm sorry I had to remove your link. It counts as an advertisement. But I'm still checking your board.

That's OK Rik. I understand.

Btw, that dollar grass is absorbing the water out of my pond! This morning the water level was down about 15". I refilled the pond but it went down again during the course of the day. I wonder if it's the dollar grass or something else. I have a lot of dollar grass tops floating around on the surface. The stems might be sucking up the water.

are you kidding? It's just a plant. If you have LOTS of them, then PERHAPS it will make a transpiration effect. It will suck water from the roots and breathe out from the leaves.
I had some pennywort in my indoor tanks, i never got that problem. try to remove the plants and put then in a bucket of water.

btw, there's only 5 persons in your board??

Hm. I posted a reply and now it's gone. . Did you delete it Rik? . Here's what I said. I said that the pond has done this every once in a blue moon for no apparent reason. Then it stops. So it might have nothing to do with the dollar grass. The bucket idea sounds good.

I have 6 persons now on my board. It's a new board and I don't know how to recruit folks.

Yep, I deleted it. This post is getting out of topic on this forum.
It's just your pond might be leaking or there's high water evaporation.

I know. That's what I meant. .

The pond stops doing that eventually so it can't be a leak.

15" of evaporation overnight? It's not that arid here. .

I know it sounds like that but the water level goes down over a foot in a matter of a few hours.

OK. Here is a list of suspects:

1. dollar grass
2. dry air (evaporation)
3. sand
4. leak
5. neighbors

One of these is the culprit. Would you like to guess before I disclose the answer?

Nope. Nice try.

It's sand.

It seems sand absorbs water when disturbed. I use the hose sometimes to make dunes in the pond and when I do, the sand gets disturbed. The sand underneath the uppermost layer of sand gets exposed and starts drinking up the water.

I came to this conclusion because the water in the pond started staying full when I just let the hose run on top of the water instead of the bottom of the pond.

So, my pond stays full when I don't disturb the sand.

I guess that's it. I'm just happy my pond is staying full.
