Hello, I joined this community in the hope that I could get some expert opinions and assistance.

I am getting married no July 5, 2008. The colour scheme for our wedding is blue, black, and white. Neither I nor my fiancée know much about flowers, so we're sort of at a loss when it comes to choosing them.

What we want, mainly, is blue flowers. I think that it would be nice to have mainly blue flowers, with white, black, or black-and-white smaller flowers in the bouquets.

But hey, that's just my imagination - if anyone would be gracious enough to lend us their expertise, and perhaps suggest a couple of flower types, maybe post a couple of pictures, or links to pictures, then we would be very grateful!

I understand that certain times of the year are not so conducive to finding certain types of flowers, so I hope that a July wedding will have some nice options!

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Hey Mike, welcome here, I hope you will enjoy the forum

Congratulations with your upcoming wedding!

Blue Flowers are a symbol of valued friendship - did you know that?

What do you think of blue Lillies? Please google on seeing their photos - I think they're beautiful....

Thanks, Sakura! I didn't know of that meaning of blue flowers. My fiancée is one of my best friends as well, so I guess that fits! LoL

Those African Blue Lilies are quite beautful. I don't really like the smell of lilies, though... but I would accept it if there are no other blue flowers available that come close to their beauty. Do you know if they bloom in July?

My pleasure

The Agapanthus as their scientific name is bloom in summer indeed. However you got more options if you don't like their smell. What about the Viola that also has a blue colored species? (called the viola hybrida). Their color vary from pale to slate blue and they have a tiny little yellow eye. They also bloom in summer

What I don't get though is which 'black flowers' you intended to include in the composition?

I don't know - I guess there are no black flowers? Or black-and-white? Heh heh I don't actually know much about flowers.

I'll look up that Viola Hybrida though, thanks!

Here's some flowers I found in a wedding book... apparently they're all blue, and all bloom in the summer.

Electric blue Volkerfrieden delphinium
Irises: alizes, amas, Dark Passion, ghost train, Above the Clouds
Sky blue hydrangeas
Bellflowers
Cranesbill geranium
Himalayan blue poppy
Leadwort(plumbago)
Love-in-a-mist (nigella)
Lupine
Pincushion flower (scabiosa)
Salvia
Texas bluebonnet
Veronica

Do you know much about any of these?

Well, I better be honest and admit that the only flower from your list I 'know' some things of is the Bellflower. What is it that you would like to know about this flower, Mike? (that is - if you are interested in it)

I guess what I would want to know is what is available in Ontario in July, and maybe how much I could expect to pay for them... any Ontarian florists on the forum?

I did some Internet searching yesterday. Here's 4 pages that have some blue flowers, with their names. I put it together in Photoshop. I also included some cool black ones, including the ones you told me about.

Now we can take this to some florists in the area, and see what they have available!

Congratulations on your wedding. I suggest using blue delphinium as the main blue in your bouquet because it is one of the few flowers that comes in a true blue. You could also use iris, nigella, scabiosa, or statice. All of these are available in July. Black flowers may be hard to come by. Although, you can get tulips in July not all colors may be available. You might want to use a very dark red rose to represent the black. I've seen varieties of red roses that look like black velvet or you could embellish the bouquet with sheer black ribbon.

Here are some links to my sources for this information:
Flower Possibilities at this link you will find the blue flowers or blue toned flowers that can be used as cut flowers.
Wedding and Party Network has an article about seasonal flowers that might be helpful. It even has a picture of a white and blue bouquet.

At the California Cut Flowers Commission, you can find out what flowers are considered in season for a particular month and if you click on the name of the flower it will show you a picture.

If you need help finding a wedding florist in Ontario, let me know. I know several in the area through a WeddingandPartyNetwork.com (which is one of the sites I work with).

If you ideas for your bouquet style the photo gallery on Wedding and Party Network is a great place to go for ideas. I think on page 5 there is a blue and white bouquet that you might like.

Sorry to be so long winded but I really get excited about flowers and weddings.

There is a Winnipeg florist called Dragonfly Flowers on McPhilips that has a blog. You might want to ask them about the prices and availability of flowers you want.

congratulations on your wedding, mike! there are a few really nice blue flowers i know of that make a lovely addition to a wedding bouquet. one of my favorites to paint is the hydrangea because one "bunch" alone can make a really nice shaped bouquet (http://www.flickr.com/photos/frankcheez/2883250891/. they are also fun for brides maids and flower girls. also nice in a bouquet are delphinium (mentioned before in previous posts) and corn flower (http://www.flickr.com/photos/midimacman/2134307004/). good luck on your special day!

If you want blue flowers, I would see if you can get poppy anenomes. As their name indicates, they look like poppies but come in blue and white versions. If you cannot find those, I would see if you can get some lobelias, which would make a good accent for other flowers.

I am unfamiliar with Ontario in July - but any good florist or nursery person should know what would be readily available to you at that time of year. If you are going a little "informal" for you bouquets - sort of a cottage flower look - I would consider the blue hydrangea (actually will be more blue-ish purple perhaps, delphiniums or larkspur which can be a brilliant more "true blue" - your silver leafed foliage of artimesia - silver mound or powis castle or even the dusty miller you mentioned would work - perhaps even some silver leafed dichondria spilling out of the bouquet - I like the one called "silver falls" and the black? - I am not so well versed in - but in Texas I have seen a black grass that I believe is a black mondo grass that might look neat tucked in here and there.

The pincushion flowers, or scabiosa someone mentioned, in Texas, are more lavendary-blue or pink as opposed to blue.

A small, but lovely little flower that is available in many colors as well as many shades of blue is Lobelia.
Good Luck and best wishes!
