Looks like Phlox to me.

Flowerlover it seems to me the petals of the phlox are more separated from each other than those of this weed?

Flowerlover is correct here. It is a phlox. Phlox is actually a native wildflower here in the States.

after some noodling online, i agree that it is a phlox, however this weed was growing in vast numbers in an open field. all of the specimens were about as big as the one i pulled out, and all about four or five feet apart, but they were everywhere! i hope this little guy grows as big and as full as some of the pictures i've seen online.

yeah, i wish i had my camera then! it's a locked gate to get to this field so i can't get back there
